BARITE CRYSTAL STACK
A stunning cluster of a geometrically shaped Barite Crystal Stack. There is no matrix on this piece, just pure, well formed crystals which make it an ideal addition to a collection. Also known as Baryte, it is named after the Greek word for ‘weight’ which is considerable for a non-metallic material. A very nice specimen 🙂 and not so easy to find lately.
5.5cm x 2.2cm x 4.3cm(main crystal only), 342g.
Xian Hualin Mine, Jiangxi, China.
An ore of Barium. Magnetism: Diamagnetic. Thermal Behavior: Inverts to another (monoclinic ?) polymorph when heated to 1149°C. Above 1400°C decomposition to barium oxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Thermoluminescent at times. Insoluble in water, acids and bases. Moderately soluble in hot, concentrated sulfuric acid, due to formation of the hydrogen sulphate.
