BUSTAMITE CRYSTAL

This is an unusually nice Bustamite Crystal featuring gemmy form with a bit of Galena.  Bustamite is quite a bit rarer than the Rhodonite more often found with the Galena from this location.  The colour and shape of the crystal in this specimen are above average.  This is a great overall example of Broken Hill minerals to add to your Australian mineral collection.  The specimen is mounted on a perspex pad for enhanced display.

Dimensions:
2.6cm x 1.9cm x 2.8cm, 13g.

Location:
Broken Hill, NSW, Australia.

Bustamite: CaMn2+Si2O6.

A calcium manganese inosilicate (chain silicate) and a member of the Wollastonite group of minerals. Magnesium, Zinc and iron are common impurities substituting for Manganese.  It is much lighter in colour than Rhodonite, but can be confused with it especially as both minerals can be found together and in similar Galena matrices.
