The primary ore of Tin, this mineral is found in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites associated with granite intrusions.  Because of its durability it is also found concentrated in alluvial placer deposits.  Large enough quantities to be commercially viable are found in Malaysia.

The mineral name Cassiterite is derived from the term “Cassiterides” which was applied islands off the western coast of Europe.  The exact location of these islands has been hotly debated.  Current thought is the source was possibly mainland Spain.  Over 2000 years ago traders had a habit of providing misleading locality information to protect their sources.  I have also heard the Cassiterides are in the British Isles.  When Tin is added to Copper  the new alloy becomes Bronze.  The discovery of Bronze enabled people to create metal objects harder and more durable than before.  Making this a very important ore to mix with rocks like Malachite and Azurite (Copper Ores).
