CHALCOPYRITE QUARTZ

A wow of a specimen with Chalcopyrite Quartz Sphalerite and Fluorescent Manganoan Calcite!  Rare large Chalcopyrite crystals covered in microcrystals make up a large chunk of the specimen.  The matrix is mainly Quartz with many good crystals and Sphalerite.  The (short and long wave UV fluorescent) Manganoan Calcite crystals are perched on the quartz crystals.  An uncommon mineral specimen and rare opportunity for your collection.

Location:
Krushev Dol Mine, Bulgaria.

Dimensions:
14cm x 11cm x 8cm, 1615g.

Chalcopyrite: CuFeS2
A major ore of copper.  Common in sulfide veins and disseminated in igneous rocks.
Weathering may lead to the formation of malachite, azurite, brochantite, langite and numerous other secondary copper minerals.

Quartz: SiO2
Quartz is the most common mineral found on the surface of the Earth.  A significant component of many igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, this natural form of silicon dioxide is found in an impressive range of varieties and colours.  There are many names for different varieties:  Cryptocrystalline varieties of quartz are listed separately under chalcedony and include agate.

Sphalerite: ZnS
Sphalerite also known as Blende or Zinc Blende is the major ore of zinc.  When pure with little or no iron it forms clear crystals with colours ranging from pale yellow (Cleiophane) to orange and red shades (Ruby Blende).  As the iron content increases it forms dark, opaque metallic crystals of Marmatite.
