FERBERITE MINERAL SPECIMEN

Availability:

Out of stock

Awesome Specimen with minor Quartz to add to your collection.  An uncommon metal Crystal showing good terminations and classic striated faces.  The Ferberite Crystal has a few small Quartz Crystals penetrating the side faces.  Ferberite is an ore of Tungsten.  Tungsten is used to fake Gold bars coated with a thin layer of real Gold.  That is because Tungsten has the same specific gravity as gold does.  The best way to test for this type of fakery is to drill a very small hole in the bar.  Thus the specimen feels heavy to hold just like Gold.

Location:
Yaogangxian, Hunan, China.

Dimensions:
5.2cm x 4.1cm x 2.1cm, 89g.

Ferberite,
Iron Tungstate:
FeWO4.

Quartz:

Ferberite belongs to a series with another mineral, Huebnerite , MnWO4.  Huebnerite is the Manganese rich end member while Ferberite is the iron rich end member.  Wolframite is the name of the series and the name applied to indistinguishable specimens and specimens intermediate between the two end members.  Most specimens found in nature fall within 20 – 80% range of the series and these are termed Wolframites, (Fe, Mn)WO4.  Ferberite is 80% or more iron.  Ferberite’s iron content causes the dramatic differences between it and Huebnerite (Wolframite is intermediate).  Ferberite is black coloured, has a black streak, is opaque with a submetallic luster, is denser, has crystals with a different elongation and can be weakly magnetic.  Huebnerite is light in color, with a lighter streak, more transparent and less dense.  Ferberite is the rarer member of the series.

Quartz:
SiO2.

Quartz is one of the most common minerals found in the Earth’s crust.  If pure, quartz forms colourless, transparent and very hard crystals with a glass like luster.  Today it leads technology being the main component of transistors which make our computers work and solar panels.
