IMPERIAL TOPAZ

A beautiful, rustic specimen of Imperial Topaz on a quartz and albite matrix.  So named for its golden colouration.  Topaz is a gemstone and is also in demand as a mineral specimen.  This piece is very much how you would find it in the field, still in its ‘matrix’ or host rock.  Mineral collectors often prefer stones in their natural habitat like this, removed from the rock the gem would normally be sold by its carat weight (one carat being 0.2g).   Topaz is a hard stone at 8 on the Mohs Scale, beautiful, available in a range of colours and relatively rare, making it perfect for high-end jewellery.

Katlang, Mardan District, Pakistan.

Dimensions:
8cm x 7cm x 5cm, 471g.

Named after Topasos Island in the Red Sea. In ancient times, the name was probably used for the gemstone that is now known as Peridot.  Occurs in pegmatites and high-temperature quartz veins, also in cavities in granites and rhyolites.
Topaz is a gemstone that has been used for centuries in jewelry. Its golden brown to yellow color is classic but is confused with the less valuable citrine, which is sometimes sold under the name topaz. The blue topaz that is often confused with aquamarine is rarely natural and is produced by irradiating and then heating clear crystals. Topaz is the November Birthstone.
