Fossilised Wood:
Petrified wood is a fossil. Formed when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay from oxygen and organisms. Then, groundwater rich in dissolved solids flows through the sediment, replacing the original plant material with silica, calcite, pyrite, or another inorganic material such as opal. The result is a fossil of the original woody material that often exhibits preserved details of the bark, wood, and cellular structures.

Petrified Wood Book Ends showing beautiful contrast of the red colour. This is an interesting specimen as there are two faces with red banded edges. This is a top quality well formed Petrified Wood specimen. They have been cut squarely and glossed with liquid glass to enhance and protect. Approximately 180 million years old. Petrified wood from the Greek root word “petro” meaning rock or stone; literally “wood turned into stone” is the name given to a special type of fossilised remains of terrestrial vegetation. It is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having completely transitioned to stone by the process of permineralisation. And from all those cartoons I thought the tree got scared…

They were carried by water and river smoothed before being deposited in Jurassic formations. The result is the outsides are smooth and often more worn away on one side than the other. Some are found as large boulders and some as smaller river smoothed elongated logs and sticks. They frequently come from agricultural fields. Here farmers plowed these rocks out of the way before they figured out what they were. Now they are scarce, having been diligently hunted for decades.

A White Ammonite Fossil Specimen for the collection. An amazing artifact and a natural example of the Fibonacci sequence. From the center out, the spiral increases at the ratio of Phi or the golden section, 1.618.
The name Ammonite, from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilised shells. These resemble tightly coiled rams’ horns. Pliny the Elder (d. 79 AD near Pompeii) called fossils of these animals ammonis cornua (“horns of Ammon”) because the Egyptian god Ammon (Amun) was typically depicted wearing ram’s horns. Often the name of an ammonite genus ends in ceras, which is Greek for “horn”.

Otodus is an extinct genus of mackerel shark which lived during the Paleocene and Eocene epochs, approximately 60 to 45 million years ago.
