A great specimen of Gemmy Rhodonite Galena Crystal.  A cluster of deep red crystal Rhodonite on a Galena matrix.  On Sale limited time til 18 02 2017.  A classic for the Aussie mineral collection.  Very good crystal colour and shape and not so easy to get these days.  A worthy addition for any collector.  This specimen is mounted on a 5cm x 5cm perspex pad for enhanced display.  My photos don’t do this piece justice as they are a little blurry and it is darker red to the live eye..

Named in 1819 by Christoph Friedrich Jasche from the Greek rhodos or “rose”, referring to its color.

Galena: PbS.

Galena is the primary ore mineral of lead. Worked for its lead content as early as 3000 BC, it is found in ore veins with sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, tennantite-tetrahedrite, etc. and in skarns, as well as in sedimentary rocks where it may replace carbonate beds or be deposited in pore spaces.
