Rhodonite MnSiO3.

Named in 1819 by Christoph Friedrich Jasche from the Greek “rhodon” meaning “rose”, referring to its colour.

Manganese Mn.

The element manganese is an essential element in our daily food and has several industrial uses.  Used in steel alloys to increase strength, hardness and durability.  Manganese is also used to make glass an amethyst colour.  That is not so surprising since manganese is the trace element responsible for quartz’s purple variety, amethyst.
