ROGERLEY MINE FLUORITE

A beautiful Rogerley Mine Fluorite Cluster. Featuring gemmy crystals and a lovely deep emerald-like green which changes to bright blue under UV light or sunlight. This is due to its very rare daylight fluorescence. This is very collectible stuff, coming from the only mine in England to operate purely for mineral specimens. Only a limited amount of material will ever come from any of the pockets at the mine. This piece was mined on 14-04-2014. The next year a different pocket was mined. I have taken pictures indoors (the greener ones) and outdoor (blue-green) plus one indoors with a UV light shone over it. My pictures don’t do it justice – we would normally take some pics in our glowroom, which is out of action. The photo with the green leaf background shows natural daylight fluorescence. This spectacular mineral appreciates in value every year.

Location:
Bluebirds Pocket Zone,  Rogerley Mine, County Durham, England.

Dimensions:
11cm x 10cm x 5cm, 717g.

ROGERLEY MINE FLUORITE

Fluorite: CaF2

It’s Fluorite, Jim, but not as you know it!  There is a reason people go nuts for Fluorite from this mine in particular – Daylight Fluorescence.  Fluorite from the Latin, fluere  “to flow” for its use as a flux. Fluorescence from Fluorite.  The element fluorine also derives its name from Fluorite, a major source for the element.  The daylight fluorescence thought caused by rare earth elements REE, phosphates Monazite, Xenotime and Fluorocarbonates mainly Synchysite.  Avoid long exposure to bright light.
