TEKTITE LARGE and round Philippinite.  This amazing piece was created after being fired into the Earth’s upper atmosphere by a meteorite impact.  The size of a nuclear explosion would have melted the sand into molten glass.  This liquid glass would have been accelerated into the outer atmosphere or space and then fallen back to earth.  It would have cooled whilst traveling through the atmosphere then falling back to Earth.  This piece has a great shape and feel to it and tektites over 100g are uncommon.  An oresome collector specimen.  Some say they come from out of space but they are formed when a meteorite impacts the Earth melting sands and material into the air at great velocity.  Moldavite is formed in the same way.

Moldavite is a green form of Tektite.  Found mainly in the southern Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic.  It is a common misconception that tektites come from space like meteorites do, star dust.  Moldavite is a particularly attractive form of tektite, sometimes faceted into gemstones.

Specimen Formation

Some say they come from space but…  Created from an exploding meteorite impact. I think the creation of MOLDAVITE goes something like this… When the Meteor is coming closer and closer to Earth it pushes a pressure wave in front of its self.  As the Meteor gets very close the pressure increases immensely.  Bouncing back and forth as the meteor gets closer Earth. Until it is so great that it creates a nuclear type explosion above the ground (maybe like the Tunguska explosion). The explosion instantanly heats up the sand on the surface to white hot and melts it into glass.  Accelerated into near space this molten glass is.  It cools whilst traveling through the atmosphere then falls back to Earth.

Whence it cools it forms the rare MOLDAVITE. The shape is from just after the explosion.  The pressure wave goes way out and creates a vacuum whist the molten glass is cooling rapidly. This is also the time when it floes through the air and atmosphere to form the strewn fields. The Bottle Green colour is due to more SIO2 in Moldavite.  The color gives value especially from the Bohemia, Czech Republic locations.  Acid in the soil is responsible for the deep troughs and valleys in the rough formations.

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo has a Meteoric Iron Knife from King Tutankhamun’s Tomb.  Ancient Man would have thought Meteorites to be a gift from the skies or Gods.  Man made weapons like swords, knives, spears and arrow heads from meteorites.  Natural iron is not necessarily “native” to Earth since it rarely occurs on the Earth’s surface by terrestrial processes.

Shooting stars, meteoroids or meteors are bits of interplanetary material falling through Earth’s atmosphere and heated to incandescence by friction.  Becoming meteors for the few seconds they streak across the sky and create glowing trails.  The material comes from a dying star which means they are Star Dust

Scientists estimate that 44 tonnes (44,000 kilograms, about 48.5 tons) of meteoritic material falls on the Earth each day.  Sometimes the number increases dramatically – these events are termed meteor showers.  Occurring annually or regular intervals as the Earth passes through the trail of comet dust debris.

Rocks from space that fall to the ground are meteorites. Most meteorites found on Earth are pebble to fist size, but some are larger than a building. Early Earth experienced many large meteorite impacts that caused extensive destruction.

One of the most intact impact craters is the Barringer Meteorite Crater in Arizona.  Giant at about 1 kilometer across, formed by the impact of a piece of iron-nickel metal 50 meters in diameter.  50,000 years old and well preserved.  A very large asteroid impact 65 million years ago, which created the 300 kilometer wide crater.   Chicxulub crater contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs.  Yep they were turned into Star Dust.

The process

The process is quite fascinating so I’ll add more detail here.  Imagine a rock of steel or Star Dust flying so fast in a vacuum, then hitting a pressurized air bubble.  This creates a pressure wave at the front and a vacuum sucking behind.  Due to the PVT Pressure Volume Temperature relationship of air on Earth we get.  An increased temperature at the front and a decreased temperature at the back.  Increased Temperature and Pressure is proportional, one follows the other.

The front of the Meteoroid melts off, the center of gravity changes so it tends to turn around and wobble.  This is when the Meteoroid breaks up upon entry, you know that’s why the space shuttle has heat barriers.  Then and meanwhile the back is seriously cooling down to well below zero and freezing.  Considering they start off from space at -273deg C and traveling at 11 km/sec to 72 km/sec.  When they land at 20deg C, 15kPa atmospheric pressure, they have traveled for 100 plus kilometers taking a short time.

There are three major types of meteorites: the “irons,” the “stones,” and the stony-irons. Although the majority of meteorites that fall to Earth are stony.  These heavy objects are easier to distinguish from Earth rocks than stony meteorites.  Meteorites also fall on other solar system bodies. Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity found the first meteorite of any type on another planet.  It discovered an iron-nickel meteorite about the size of a basketball on Mars in 2005.  Then found a much larger and heavier iron-nickel meteorite in 2009 in the same region.

The Tektite to the right is a large Breadcrust Philippinite.  Created from an exploding meteorite impact.  The size of a nuclear explosion melts the sand into molten glass.  Accelerated into near space this molten glass is.  It cools whilst traveling through the atmosphere then falls back to Earth.  Tektites over 100g are uncommon.  Oresome Star Dust specimens for the collector.  Some say they come from out of space but they don’t quite get into space.  This is how Moldavite forms.
