This is a great example of how the gemstone is often found, still in its ‘matrix’ or host rock. Many mineral collectors prefer stones in their natural habitat like this, removed from the rock the gem would normally be sold by its carat weight (one carat being 0.2g). Topaz is a hard stone at 8 on the Mohs Scale, beautiful, available in a range of colours and relatively rare, making it perfect for high-end jewellery.
